Script Your Story: Intro to Screenwriting

CLASS DESCRIPTIONDo you have ideas bubbling for a short film? Have you dreamed of writing a movie? Learn what it takes to write a screenplay! Our focus is to learn the craft of narrative screenwriting, developing main character energy, screenplay formatting to set the tone, build the world, introduce the characters and write great action and dialogue. Class will include lecture and scene writing exercises. Bring your ideas, inspiration and main character energy to learn the art and craft of writing for narrative film and television. She recently directed episodes of the family drama BEL AIR (Peacock), the fantasy THE SPIDERWICK CHRONICLES (Disney+), the musical UP HERE (Hulu) and the soapy drama SEX/LIFE (Netflix). She has also directed beloved episodes of THE SEX LIVES OF COLLEGE GIRLS (HBO Max), WU-TANG: AN AMERICAN SAGA (Hulu), FANTASY ISLAND (Fox), DIARY OF A FUTURE PRESIDENT (Disney+) and others. Raimist holds a B.A. and a M.F.A. in Directing from the UCLA School of Film and Television and a M.A. in Women’s Studies and a Ph.D. in Feminist Studies from the University of Minnesota. At the Directors Guild of America, she serves as the Co-Chair of the Special Projects Committee, Co-Chair of the Disability Committee, the Alternate Co-Chair of the Women's Steering Committee and on the leadership team of the Women's Steering Committee Women Directors Mentorship Program, The Squad. SPEAK MPLS is your community media home. We offer introductory level classes for anyone that has a story to share. Dive deep into your media journey by joining one of our monthly cohorts and implementing our industry‘s best practices.  CLASS REGISTRATION, ATTENDANCE, CANCELLATION + OTHER POLICIES- Class schedules and registration information are available at www.speakmpls.com. - Once registered, participants will receive an email confirmation with additional details on joining the Zoom call.- Please join the Zoom call on time. The instructor will begin at the start of class.- In the event that a class must be canceled, SPEAK MPLS will contact registered participants with as much notification as possible, to either reschedule or refund the cost of the class.- A participant may cancel a class by providing written notice of cancellation to SPEAK MPLS’ Director of Education James Harris at james@speakmpls.com within 48-hours of the scheduled class. Participants may have a one-time option to reschedule the class at no additional cost.  If a participant fails to attend the rescheduled class, no refunds for class fee will be granted.  If the class was a one-on-one class, the instructor has the discretion to reschedule based on the instructor’s availability.- If participants have financial challenges to pay for membership or classes, SPEAK MPLS offers a sliding scale fee.
